The first step is to assure that every school library contains materials which represent a variety of mainstream social and philosophical view points. Since the library is visited by all students, it provides an immediate visual impact on a student’s perception of the intellectual tone of a school building. If the school library contains reading materials which represent only one side of an issue, students are silenced and subtly “told” to embrace a pre-determined position on most social issues. Therefore, the absence of diversity in print and media resources impedes the development of critical thinking skills and excludes academic freedom for students. To address these concerns, AAF members will begin by placement of materials representing a wide range of approaches to current events in neighborhood high schools and middle schools.
